PARKERSBURG — Kendal Mader worked a clean sheet and Parkersburg South tallied a pair of second-half goals here Saturday afternoon at Erickson All-Sports Facility to upend visiting Huntington, 2-0. Highlander keeper Jordan Maynard collected her 14th and final save in the 80th minute when she dove to stop a shot by Patriot Ava Barton. Barton didn’t find the back of the net nor did teammate Samara Nunn, who hit the crossbar in the 78th minute and had a chip shot land on top of the net in the 74th minute. Nonetheless, the Patriots of head man Ron Bucholtz improved to 9-6-2 and the coach said of Faith Childers’ 44th minute tally that it was a “world class shot.” After the scoreless first half, Nunn had a pair of prime chances, but couldn’t cash in. Just seven seconds into the 44th minute Samantha Martin fed Childers, who blistered a shot into the left upper 90 as Maynard had no chance. “Obviously, it was down in their end most of the first half and certainly in the second half,” said Bucholtz, whose squad didn’t allow a shot on goal after intermission as HHS had one on frame apiece in the first half by Sophia Aya-ay, Bella Hale and Alex Lindberg. “We picked up the intensity a little more. They’ve got a good keeper. “I thought we controlled the tempo of the game pretty well. Movement and passing was pretty shrp. We’d string five, six passes together and then we would kind of lose our way and lose our communication and not hit an accurate pass.” Less than two minutes after Childers’ tally, Lilly Carter had a shot in the box for the 7-7-2 Highlanders, but it was too high. The only corner kick of the match came in the 71st minute, but the Patriots couldn’t score after Cameron Limer booted it. With 17 seconds left in the 75th minute, Mackenzie Mott had a free kick and found Jessie Life, who unloaded a screamer past Maynard for the 2-0 cushion. “I was pleased with the way the girls played, especially the second half,” Bucholtz added as the Patriots return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday for senior night when George Washington invades. “We’re at the point in the season where we have to bring the intensity from the opening whistle. Come playoff time if you start flat and get stung you might not claw your way back into it.” Life had a trio of shots on goal in the first half, which included an attempt thanks to a Kyra Sandy pass. Martin and Karleigh Dowler also tested Maynard in the first half to no avail.
