PARKERSBURG — In a battle of ranked Class AAA programs here Tuesday evening inside Erickson All-Sports Facility, it was No. 12 Parkersburg South which got a tally in each half from Jessie Life en route to doubling up Cabell Midland, 2-1. The Patriots of head coach Ron Bucholtz sent the Knights to their second straight defeat and improved their record to 7-6-2 with a 7 p.m. varsity start up next on Thursday at St. Clairsville. PSHS keeper Kendal Mader had six first-half saves, which included two stops on shots by Elizabeth Dick. Cabell Midland (12-5-1) found itself behind on the scoreboard in the 27th minute. Patriot Cameron Limer sent a corner kick into the box, but the ball eventually came right back to her. When she sent a cross in, Life was able to get a solid foot on the ball in midair and beat Knight keeper Ellaina Hess for the 1-0 lead. That proved to be the score at intermission, but Limer also had a cross in the 32nd minute to Samara Nunn, which didn’t materialize. CM’s Emilie Charles had a 30-yard direct kick in the 49th minute, but Mader made the save. Three minutes later, Ellie Foggin had a through ball to a racing Nunn, but her shot glanced off the crossbar. Soon thereafter, the Patriot defense was unable to clear a ball and with Mader on the ground and away from the net, Knight Cailyn Lowe was able to easily knock in a goal to tie the match with 28:05 to play. Nunn also had a good look in the 61st minute thanks to a cross by Mackenzie Mott, but her shot was just wide. Nearing the end of the 65th minute, Foggin had the ball on the left side of the field and crossed it to Life, who was on the far right side of the box. Life was able to put a solid strike on the ball and managed to beat a diving Hess, who had five saves, as the ball went inside the far left post for the 2-1 advantage with 14:59 remaining. The Knights, who play host at 7 p.m. Thursday in a varsity only Mountain State Athletic Conference placement match versus Parkersburg, had a prime opportunity to square it in the 73rd minute. Despite not being marked by a Patriot defender, Dick’s shot in the box was stopped by Mader for one of her nine saves. Faith Childers had a late shot on goal for the Patriots and Cabell Midland’s Josie Plumley had an attempted late chip, but Mader was there. Charles took all four of the Knights’ corner kicks as the visitors held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
