TWO-OUT LIGHTNING FOR SOUTH

PARKERSBURG — Ripley couldn’t get the third out when it needed to here Tuesday evening at Hank Greenburg Field and the second-seeded Vikings’ campaign ended following a 10-7 setback at the hands of No. 1 seed Parkersburg South in the Class AAA, Region IV, Section 1 tournament. “We had a bunch of timely hitting and plus a couple guys down at the bottom of the lineup came through,” said PSHS skipper Todd Burner, whose 15-3 club takes on third-seeded Parkersburg at 6:30 p.m. today back at the Hank. Ripley (12-14) jumped out early via a five-run top of the second for skipper Shane Casto, but the visitors didn’t score again until JT Kemp’s two-run double in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Patriots sandwiched two-run third and fifth innings with a big six-run fourth to take control. All of Parkersburg South’s runs scored with two outs. PSHS starter Colin Bryant was lifted after two innings and Chase Freshour worked 4 2-3 innings for the win. Bryce Eagle earned a one-out save. “I told him after the game the good thing is you got to sit out two days and you are coming back to pitch again,” coach Burner said of Bryant. “We dug ourselves a hole and didn’t hit. We started hitting the ball and Chase pitched a heckuva game.” Josh Carte drew a bases loaded free pass, which scored Dane Petersen for the first run of the game. Gavin Blankenship then reached on a fielder’s choice bunt that went out in front of the plate. A charging Bryant tried to scoop and pitch the ball to catcher Nick Yoho, but it went above his head. No. 9 hitter Kaegun Jackson then hit into an RBI fielder’s choice. Although it could’ve been a double play, a throwing error allowed another run in. Viking catcher Tyler Haskins made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout. Parkersburg South, which had seven through nine hitters Drew Cochran, Jarrett Flinn and Blake McMullen each go 2 for 3, got things going in the third. Flinn and McMullen scored on shortstop Todd Burner’s two-run single to center. In the key six-run fourth, the Patriots batted around. Grant Hussey, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored the first run on Flinn’s two-out RBI hit. McMullen followed with a run-scoring double. After a walk to Ben Menarchek, Burner had another two-run single, which was followed by a two-run single from Eagle. Eagle nearly took Ripley losing pitcher Davis Haynes out of the park for a bomb in the bottom of the first, but came up just short with his towering shot to left. A walk to Yoho in the fifth was the last batter for Haynes, who was replaced by Kemp. However, Kemp proceeded to issue a free pass to Hussey. Following two quick outs, McMullen delivered a two-run single to center.
