SOUTH POWERS PAST PHS

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South freshman Makayla Hannah made the most of her first career start, smacking a two-run double and a two-run homer, as the host Patriots handed rival Parkersburg an 11-6 setback Thursday at Godbey Field. The victory for PSHS head coach Cindi Taylor’s squad improved their record to 9-11 and gave the Patriots the top seed in next week’s sectional tournament. South will be off until 7 p.m. Tuesday when it faces the loser of No. 3 PHS and No. 2 Ripley, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m. back at Godbey. Parkersburg’s Jacklynn Williams made her varsity pitching debut and went the distance in taking the mound setback. PHS, which dropped to 8-11 and plays host at 5:30 p.m. today versus Spring Valley in a Mountain State Athletic Conference placement game, trailed just 7-6 going into the bottom of the fifth. Patriot winning pitcher Ashlee Ellison got some extra run support in that inning when Kurin Worgull, who went 3 for 3, had a one-out single and then Hannah hit a bomb to left. PHS left fielder Maggie Sauers tracked the ball perfectly and made an attempted leaping catch, but the ball bounced off her webbing and plopped over the fence. South leadoff hitter Aurora Slusher, who went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, singled and later crossed the plate on a Kelly Amos RBI hit to make it 10-6. Parkersburg South added an insurance run in the sixth when Allie Taylor reached via an infield single and came home on Worgull’s run-scoring knock to left-center. Parkersburg’s Kacee Roberts is congratulated by head coach/father Jason Roberts as she rounds third base following a two-run homer in the fourth inning against Parkersburg South on Thursday at Godbey Field. It was Slusher’s triple to open the bottom of the first which helped put the hosts ahead 1-0 as she scored on Ellison’s RBI single. The Big Reds, who were playing without a pair of starters because they were at the national choir competition in Florida, tied the game in the second. Janna Yost singled and eventually scored on Morgan Nichols’ RBI single. It could’ve been a big inning for PHS, but Slusher made a diving catch with runners on second and third to rob Sauers of potential extra bases. South tacked on two more runs in the second. Allie Taylor, who went 3 for 4, singled and after Worgull had a one-out double, Hannah roped a two-run two-bagger down the left-field line. PHS took its first lead at 4-3 following a three-run top of the third. Kacee Roberts, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, homered to left-center to start the third. Kenzie Riddle, the Big Reds’ usual starting pitcher, later added a two-run single which plated Emily Allen and Maggie Richards, both of whom reached on singles. The hosts answered the Big Reds’ three-spot with one of its own to go up 6-4 after three. Williams issued walks to Amos and Paige Winans before Taylor touched her up with a three-run jack to left. Parkersburg tied it for the final time by scoring twice in the fourth thanks to a two-run stand-up double from Roberts. Maddi Leggett had previously walked before reaching third on Sauers’ double. Parkersburg South broke the tie in the last of the fourth when Slusher reached via a hit by pitch, stole second and scored on Winans’ two-out RBI single to center.
