WARRIORS WIN AGAINST SOUTH SOFTBALL

PARKERSBURG — Sarah Greenlee was clutch in the circle. The Warren senior closer hurled 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Warriors downed Parkersburg South, 10-7, Wednesday at Godbey Fields. The right-handed-throwing Greenlee struck out five and got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam unscathed in the bottom of the seventh inning. “Sarah has been in that position a lot, and I’m confident with her,” said Warren skipper Jenny Lynch. “She likes that situation. She always pulls through.” Junior righty Diamond Decker started the game in the circle, and ended up getting the win. “Diamond pitched a heckuva game,” said Lynch, whose Warriors improved their record to 4-2 overall. “We have to back her up a little bit better than we did.” Helping her own cause, Decker had three hits, including two doubles and her first home run of the spring. She finished with three runs-batted-in. Elisabeth Williams also had three RBIs and three hits for the winners, including two doubles. Josie Yoho and Grace Way each added two singles, while Sydney Benson drove in two runs. “We’re starting to really hit the ball,” Lynch said. “They’re starting to relax a little bit and they know that’s when they hit.” South, which dropped a 9-8 decision at Warren Monday, fell to 6-5 on the season. “We’re young, and we’re coming around,” said Patriots boss Cindi Taylor. “Our pitchers’ arms were a little sore tonight. This was our third game this week.” Jordan Stanley threw first and was relieved by Makayla Hannah in the fourth. Aurora Slusher, Ashlee Ellison, and Gigi Gerichten each had two hits for South. Gerichton slugged a solo home run in the fifth. Benefitting from the sun in right field, South staked itself to a 2-0 first-inning advantage. Ashlee Ellison plated Slusher with a single and later scored on a Decker wild pitch. In the third inning, Warren got on the board when Williams doubled home two runs, and Decker blasted a two-run shot to center to make it 4-2. After the Warriors stretched their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth, the Patriots capitalized on a couple of fielding errors and cut it to one. Slusher had a sac fly and Rylea Graham singled home another run. But Warren had another four-run inning to go up 9-4 in the fifth. SydneyBenson, Emilie Mallett, Williams, and Decker each had an RBI. In the bottom half of the frame, though, South countered with three more runs to reduce the defict to two. Kylee McCorkle and Paige Winans both walked to start the inning, and later came around to score on a groundout and wild pitch, respectively. After Gerichten tagged Decker with a two-out solo homer to center, the latter was relieved by Greenlee. Greenlee got out of the inning by fanning Slusher. In the sixth, Greenlee struck out the side. But the Patriots filled the bases in their last at-bats, and had the potential winning run at the plate in Gerichten. Bearing down, Greelee slipped a called third strike past Gerichten, and then got Slusher on a game-ending pop to her. “You know, that’s a great team,” said Taylor of Warren. “They have pitching. They have hitting. You can see their momentum is getting better from the time we play them last time. They’re just a good team.” Taylor paused. “We struggled and had a few errors tonight,” the Patriot coach continued. “Our hitters just couldn’t produce when we needed them to.”
