SOUTH VS. WARREN TEAMS SPLIT A PAIR

VINCENT — Near-freezing temperatures did little to cool down the red-hot bats of both the visiting Parkersburg South Lady Patriots or the host Warren Lady Warriors in Monday evenings non-conference showdown. The two teams combined to pound out 33 basehits, including a dozen doubles as Warren scored a thrilling, 9-8 walk-off victory in eight innings. Elizabeth William’s double plated Avery Grayson with the game winner after South had rallied from three runs down in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. “Elizabeth (Williams) is a four-year starter for us and she always seems to come up big when we need her the most,” said veteran Warren head coach Jenny Lynch. “We have a lot of faith in her and I can’t think of anyone else I would want up there in that situation.” Early on it looked like the game might well develop into a pitchers duel between South’s Jordan Stanley and Warren’s Sara Greenlee before the bats for both teams began to come to life. Warren scored a single run in the first on an RBI single by Williams before the Lady Patriots answered with a pair in the top of the second on run-scoring doubles by Ashlee Ellison and Haley Hatfield. The Warriors tied things up in the second when Gracie Way singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Grayson and scored on a base hit by second baseman Chloe Corser. Greenlee kept the Lady Pats off the board in the third and fourth innings and then collected a key double in a two-run fourth inning for the Lady Warriors that put them in front 4-2. An RBI hit by Alexis Feick allowed Parkersburg South to close to within a run in the top of the fifth but a single by Williams and a double by shortstop Diamond Decker pushed the lead to back to a pair at 5-3. South left the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings before missing yet another golden opportunity in the sixth. Hits by Aurora Slusher, Rylea Graham and Kelly Amos plated one run and put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before Greenlee recovered to retire the next three hitters without allowing another run to cross the plate. “I can’t say by any means that Sara (Greenlee) pitched a great game tonight but she really battled,” said Lynch. “She made some great pitches when we really needed them.” Warren added a pair of insurance runs in the last of the sixth as pinch-hitter Sydney Benson doubled, Grayson walked and Corser scored both runners with a two-bagger to deep right field to give Warren a 7-4 lead heading to the final inning. Ellison doubled to lead off the top of the seventh and scored on a base-hit by Alexis Feick to cut the lead to two. Haley Hatfield singled in Feick and then scored the tying run on a groundout by Slusher. Kelly Amos kept things going with a two-out single and then scored the go-ahead run when Kylee McCorckle doubled into the right-center field gap. Warren got a one-out basehit by catcher Olivia Shutts and then got a break when Emilie Mallett reached first on an error after striking out. Greenlee helped herself in a huge way when she singled in the tying run forcing the game into extra innings. Feick collected a two-out double in the top of the eighth for South but Greenlee left her stranded by fanning Hatfield to set up the thrilling finish. Grayson led off the inning with a solid base-hit off of Ellison, who entered the game in the seventh in relief of Jordan Stanley, and moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Corser. Williams then drilled the first pitch she saw deep into right centerfield to score Grayson with the game-winning run. “I am just so proud of the way these girls fought back,” said Lynch, whose team improved to 3-2 with the win. “Props to South they really hit the ball well. Every win is a big win for sure.” Amos, Ellison and Feick each collected three hits apiece to pace a 17-hit attack for South, which slipped to 5-4 on the season. Williams collected three hits for Warren while Grayson, Corser, Decker, Shutts and Greenlee knocked out two-hits apiece. The two will get a quick chance for a rematch when they hook-up again Wednesday in Parkersburg.
