PARKERSBURG SOUTH’S BEN MENARCHEK DOMINATES PHS

PARKERSBURG — Ohio Valley University signee Ben Menarchek twirled a six-inning two-hitter while Todd Burner had a bases-clearing three-bagger here Tuesday night for visiting Parkersburg South as the Patriots handed rival Parkersburg a 14-2 setback at Bennett Stump Field. “He’s only pitched one other outing and that was a combined no-hitter (with Drew Cochran versus Spring Valley),” said first-year Patriot skipper Todd Burner, who watched Menarchek allow just one earned with two walks and nine punchouts on 97 pitches. “He struggled in the first inning and we were trying to get four innings out of him. “He probably threw about 25 pitches in that first inning. We talked and he wanted to try and finish it. Our bottom half (of the order) helped us tonight, definitely, to get back to the top. As long as we can put the ball in play things can happen. We’ve been fortunate enough this year so far and we’ve been hitting the ball.” PSHS, which welcomes Ripley for a 7 p.m. first pitch today at Hank Greenburg Field, led 2-1 after two and exploded for six runs in the top of the third. Losing pitcher Kam Mace, who allowed eight runs but only two earned while fanning four, was lifted by head man Alan Burns after consecutive infield errors in the third. Max Anderson had both hits for the red and white, who play host to Warren at 5 p.m. today back at City Park, and that included a single in the first after Mace had walked. Mace scored on a wild pitch to give PHS (3-4) its only lead at 1-0. The two-spot by the Patriots in the top of the second was started by a Reece Fletcher leadoff double. He scored on an RBI single by Cochran, the No. 8 hitter, and courtesy runner Thomas Nutter also crossed the plate after entering for catcher Nick Yoho on a wild pitch. In the Patriots’ big third frame, coach Burner’s squad sent 11 batters to the dish. Bryce Eagle got it going with a one-out double and he later scored on a balk. Mace fanned Fletcher for the second out, but then issued consecutive free passes to Chase Freshour and Grant Hussey. Yoho followed with an RBI knock. After the back-to-back errors, Menarchek had an RBI infield single and Burner had a run-scoring bloop single to center. PHS found itself trailing 9-1 after the Patriots tacked on a run in the top of the fourth. Freshour singled and scored when Cochran had an RBI two-out bases-loaded single to right-center. Although the Big Reds got that run back when Anderson singled and later scored on an error that allowed Nathan Lindenmuth to reach in the last of the fourth, Menarchek continued to cruise. Aside from plunking Nolan Brace in the fourth and issuing a leadoff walk in the fifth to No. 9 hitter T.J. McIntosh, the Patriot right-hander retired seven of the last eight PHS batters. Freshour got the top of the sixth inning going by reaching on a single and stealing second. After Hussey was plunked for a second time, Yoho knocked in his second run. Colin Bryant later reached from the nine-hole on a bloop single to center. Menarchek, who finished 3 for 5, then produced a bases-loaded RBI single and Burner cleared the bases with his shot down the left-field line.
