PARKERSBURG SOUTH VS. PHS AT SOUTH INVITE

PARKERSBURG — A pair of meet records were established here Friday inside the Erickson All-Sports Facility during the Parkersburg South Invitational. Parkersburg High School topped runner-up Parkersburg South for the boys title, 165-138. The Big Red girls amassed 132 points to finish ahead of runners-up Williamstown and Wheeling Park (105) while the host Patriots tallied 94 points for fourth. Big Red Madison Trippett crossed the finish line in the 1600 with a time of 5:16.18 to break the 2005 record of 5:19.40 previously held by University’s Heather Satel-Elkins. Wheeling Park’s 4×200 team of Aubrey Wiethe, Marlee Porter, Alex Knight and Abby Snedeker went 1:50.24 to edge out the old record of 1:50.66 set just last year by Big Reds Samantha Williams, Trippett, Megan Kupfner and Abby Tanner. Snedeker (100, 13:07; 200, 26.67) and Wiethe (100H, 16.77; 300H, 48.60) finished tied for high-point scoring honors with 25 tallies apiece and joined Trippett (800, 2:22.32) as the only female double-winners. In the boys high-point race, Ian Domenick ran a leg on the Big Reds’ victorious 4×400 (3:44.08) squad with teammates Will LeMaster, Anthony Bradford and anchor DeShaun Akers, who won the 400 (53.71), to finish the meet with 25 points. That put him in a three-way tie with Parkersburg South’s Chris Elschlager and Dominic Collins. Elschlager won the 110 hurdles (16.12) and the long jump (19 feet, 5 inches) while Collins had triumphs in the high jump (5-8) and in the 200, where he stretched to beat Big Red Tyler Moler, 22.79 to 22.80. Domenick’s victories came in the 800 (2:04.29), where he bested teammates Anthony Bradford and Keegan Barnette, as well as in the mile where he posted a 4:34.88. The PHS boys of head man Rod O’Donnell, whose squad attempted to race this weekend at both Morgantown and Hurricane, also had individual wins by Moler in the 100 (11.37; Big Red runner-up Isaiah Owen, 11.55), and Benjamin Lake in the 2-mile (10:17.78), who topped runner-up Big Red Devin Ours. “We were fortunate to get in a meet this week,” admitted O’Donnell, who watched Domenick, LeMaster, Benjamin Lake and the anchor Bradford top the field in the 4×800 (8:35.06). “We were pleased with it. We had a few kids out, but we ran well.” Head coach Erwin DeGraef’s Patriot boys also had individual top-of-the-podium finishes by Cameron Gill in the 300 hurdles (41.96; runner-up Bradey Fayad of Williamstown), Nate Santiago in the pole vault (12 feet) and Nathan Rockhold in the discus (128-5), who bested Big Red Shane Miller by 5 inches. Miller also finished runner-up in the shot put to Wheeling Park’s Jermain Snodgrass (48-0 to 46-6). The other wins for the Patriot boys came in the 4×100 where Elschlager, Collins, Kyle Carpenter and Tommy Habeb at anchor crossed in 45.79 along with the shuttles (Beverage, Elschlager, Haden McConnell, Collins; 1:00.50). WPHS won the 4×200 with a time of 1:36.19 (Jack Stakem, Justin Levelle, Nate Phillips, Devaughn McWhorter). Zach Hall, Williamstown’s head girls coach, watched Emilee Ellison and Stella Flanagin (13:02.24 and 13:10.98) finish one-two in the 2-mile. The ‘Jackets also swept the throwing events thanks to Bethany Arnold’s win in the shot put (34-8.25) as well as a one-two finish in the discus by Eliza Newton (98-1) and Brianna Kendall (98-0). First-year PSHS head girls coach Tara Swiger also got a win from Madi Gersper in the high jump. Her effort of 4-10 bested Big Red Lexi Dugan (4-8) as well as Yellowjacket Carsen Hesson (4-8). The Patriot girls also claimed titles in the 4×800 (Abby Herring, Emily Dugan, Amber Flinn, Sierra Hays; 10:36.03) as well as the shuttles (Allie Perkins, Emily Yanok, Gersper, Hays; 1:11.15). Samantha Williams got a win for PHS girls head coach Lia Fleek in the long jump as the Big Red just nipped Gersper (14-11.5 to 14-11.0). PHS’ Sophie Thompson (7-6) and Patriot Shannon Ruble (7-0) were the only participants in the pole vault. PHS also claimed a win with Trippett anchoring the 4×400 (4:27.37) thanks to the efforts of Erin and Emily Cunningham and Jordan Balog. Erin Cunningham finished third in the 400 to winner Zara Zervos of John Mashall, who topped Tucker County’s Sydney Moore (1:02.10 to 1:05.74).
