THIS WEEK IN MOV ATHLETICS

The completion of the spring tab means a return to a somewhat normal schedule for yours’ truly. In additon, I?can finally turn my full attention to the spring athletic slate which means I once again bring you the sporting events to keep an eye on in the area. Several local baseball teams are off to hot starts, but no one may be en fuego more than Adrian Duelley’s Gilmer County club. Titans’ players and coaches have worked through a schedule mixed with Class AA and A clubs to the tune of an 11-2 record. Holding 2017 state runner-up Ravenswood, who has eight seniors back, to one run and four hits in a 5-1 win on Thursday is no small feat. Even more impressive was their victory over Tyler Consolidated Saturday. Jacob Persinger and Jordan Brown combined in a one-hit effort of the Class A No. 7 Silver Knights in a 7-2 triumph. Brown, Persinger and Dalton Rose form the backbone of a solid Titans staff in a sport where you can never have enough good hurlers. Gilmer’s only losses are to the next team on this list, 12-2 and 5-3. Terry Smith’s Williamstown group flashed the bats, leather and arms during the two-game sweep of the Titans back on March 17. Smith has his team off to an 8-0 start with a big game at home against Huntington St. Joe at 4:30 p.m. today. How about Belpre as well? The Golden Eagles pounded out 30 runs in a 29-run victory over Miller during a sweep of their Tri-Valley Conference rivals Saturday. Convienently, Belpre and Williamstown are scheduled for for a meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at Civitan Park. In the Parkersburg crosstown rivalry three PHS and South teams battle this week in town, dependent on the weather of course. Baseball and tennis both have contests Tuesday. The female netters of Jeff Olson and Heidi Asbury square off against the South group led by first-year head coach Lucy Holland at 4:30 p.m. at City Park tennis courts. Both lineups changed a lot due to graduation and some upsets in challenge matches. Each team brings a completely different singles’ and doubles’ lineup to the court then last season. If you happen to be a fan of both sports and are worried about your attendance at each outing fear not. Alan Burns’ and Todd Burner’s ball clubs don’t clash at Hank Greenberg Field until 7 p.m. Just in case a matchup against the Big Reds wasn’t enough for one week, the Patriots also play host to Class AAA state runner-up Hurricane at 6 p.m. Friday. Last year’s state player of the year Garrett Gress could be slated to face South on the mound. Jay and I will provide you with all the coverage in Wednesday morning’s paper. On the smaller diamond, Jason Roberts’ Parkersburg High softball team plays host to Cindi Taylor’s Patriots Wednesday. Taylor’s team possesses a tough to stop offense. Patriots’ bats have failed to score five runs or more in just once this season. Much like South baseball, PHS softball plays Hurricane this week. The Big Reds hope to put some runs on the board against the reigning Class AAA state champion Redskins on Thursday. The Redskins took the first game 8-0 back on March 15. West Virginia Second Sports Activities Commission director Bernie Dolan probably loves the upcoming track schedule this week. Meets are scattered all over the area the later part of the seven-day slate. Tuesday’s Marietta Night Relays open the festivities followed by the Parkersburg South and St. Marys Invites on Friday and Gilmer County’s Chup Robinson Invite on Saturday. Crew has the always prestigious Lindamood Cup Regatta Saturday to round out a busy sports period.
