DAY 1 OF STATE SWIM MEET IN THE BOOKS

MORGANTOWN — The Parkersburg High girls are in position to contend for the Class AAA state swimming championship. The Big Reds shattered school records in six events in Friday’s preliminaries at the WVU Natatorium and will be competing for state titles in 10 events today. Jaden Welsh was the first swimmer to finish in the 100 breaststroke with a school-best time of 1 minute, 7.5 seconds and in the 200 individual medley with a 2:15.43 mark, also a program record. Other school records were set in the 200 medley relay (Mary Michael Strobl, Welsh, Grace Cox, Emma Padden; 1:54.09), the 50 freestyle (Cox; 25.02), 100 butterfly (Cox; 58.63) and the 200 freestyle relay (Kate Snider, Olivia Collett, Cox, Welsh; 1:44.11). Collett also qualified in the 200 freestyle (2:08) and the 500 freestyle (5:45.93) while Snider and Strobl move on in the 100 backstroke (1:03.70 and 1:05.10) and the 200 IM (2:19.44 and 2:22.97). Snider, Strobl, Collett and Padden combined to finish third in the 400 freestyle relay prelims with a time of 3:52.78 and will compete for a state crown. Parkersburg South’s Makayla Burns qualified for the state finals in two events — the 200 free (2:11.06) and the 500 free (5:56.08). On the boys side, Dominic Collins finished first in two prelims for Parkersburg South. He completed the 50 freestyle in 21.36 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 48.36. He was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay, along with Macguire McDuff, Oliver Fletcher and Reece Fletcher, which finished first in 1:35.42. McDuff qualified in the 200 freestyle (1:54.73) and the 100 backstroke (59.29) To go along with the theme of breaking school records at PHS, David Snider did so in the 100 backstroke with a time 52.19 to finish first in the preliminaries. He was also first in the 100 butterfly (52.64) and a part of the 200 medley relay (1:44.07) and 400 freestyle relay, which finished second and first, respectively. AJ Vann and Brady Colvin joined Snider in both relays while Aidan Azinger was in the 200 and Jakeb Bertram in the 400. Other local relay teams to qualify for today’s finals were South’s 400 freestyle relay (McDuff, Collins and the Fletchers; 3:37.41) and PHS’ 200 freestyle relay (Bertram, Vann, Nick D’Costa and Joel Butcher; 1:40.83). Colvin will join Snider in the 100 butterfly finals after finishing fifth with a time of 57.15. Colvin also was third in the 200 IM (2:06.51) and will compete for a state title. Azinger was 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.04). For South, McDuff will compete in a pair of individual finals — the 200 freestyle (1:54.73; sixth) and the 100 backstroke (59.29; fifth).
