PARKERSBURG SOUTH WINS OVAC SEMIFINAL GAME

PARKERSBURG — Host Parkersburg South raced out to a 20-2 lead after just 5:17 of play Tuesday night and the Patriots never looked back after their sizzling start to down Indian Creek 77-43 in an OVAC 5A semifinal game at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. Now 18-1 South will tangle with University on Saturday at Ohio University-Eastern at St. Clairsville, Ohio in the 5A championship game, pitting the top two Class AAA teams in West Virginia in a 1 (South) vs. 2 (University) duel. But there was no doubt about the Patriots’ dominance versus the Redskins Tuesday night, with junior Brayden Mooney’s 19 leading the way point-wise, followed by Shane Snider with 10, Cole Plants with nine, Malaki Sylvia with eight and Seth Fallon with seven. South fired in five treys in the opening period, three in initial 2:30 on 3-balls by Fallon, Snider and Mooney to roar to a 11-2 advantage. Then a 9-0 spurt propelled the Patriots ahead at the 2:43 mark. Another Mooney hoop and free throw preceded a Kerwyn Marshall trey at 1:22 for a 23-point gap at 26-3. The second stanza saw South outpoint its visitors 21-9 to further the lead out to 47-16 by halftime as the rout was on. The second half was more of the same throughout, but tempered by South head coach Mike Fallon substituting freely and often, making the final 16 minutes pretty even. For Indian Creek, now 10-9, Austin Yaich finished with eight points, Michael Allen with seven, and Austin Jackson and Wyatt Pugh each with six. “We were in the flow offensively, and I think we’re starting to turn that corner and hopefully getting ready for March,” said coach Fallon. “After tonight though, we’ve got to run the gauntlet. We’ve got (No. 3) GW (George Washington) here Thursday, then University, (No. 7) Woodrow (Wilson) and of course the sectional with PHS. So it doesn’t get any easier. But our schedule with the teams we’ve played this year, I think we’ll be tested for about anything. We’ve been in close games, we’ve been able to see various scenarios, so hopefully this schedule has helped prepare us for March.”
