SOUTH OVERCOMES SLOW START.

PARKERSBURG — Seth Fallon’s deep 3 with 2.5 seconds left in regulation got No. 1 Parkersburg South into overtime and the Patriots took care of business after that as the hosts stunned Ohio Division I eighth-ranked Logan, 68-63, here Saturday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. The Chieftains, who dropped to 15-2 and come back to Parkersburg on Tuesday to square off against the Big Reds, dominated the opening period and held an 18-point lead at 23-5 after a Caiden Landis three-point play. A 3 by Colton Luther closed the gap to 15 after one, but Logan used a corner trifecta by Layton Cassady to hold what appeared to be a comfortable 33-18 advantage at intermission. “This place was packed with purple,” said Patriot head coach Mike Fallon, who watched Cole Plants go for a game-high 22 points and grab nine rebounds. “We love purple because of Anna’s Army, but we didn’t like that much purple being here tonight. “Their crowd was unreal. That was two great basketball teams battling and battling. I think the biggest thing was putting pressure on them in the second half on their guards where in the first half they were getting open looks and picking us apart.” Logan hit 13 of 23 from the floor in the first half including 6 of 13 from long range. After the break, the visitors made 10 of 24 overall and 4 of 11 from the field, but the biggest difference was five turnovers in each of the third and fourth stanzas. Logan had just six turnovers at intermission. “We challenged our kids at halftime about their heart and getting after them and what do you have inside of you,” added coach Fallon, whose team improved to 14-1 and plays at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday versus Hurricane at W.Va. State in the Little General Shootout at the Big House. “That was the greatest thing and that’s all we had to say to them. Tonight, I was just a cheerleader on the side. Those guys found a way to win this thing. Unbelievable.” While Logan started the first 3 minutes of the third going 1 of 3 from the floor and committing three turnovers, the Patriots seized on that and quickly cut the deficit to 35-27. Plants scored six straight points and Shane Snider, who finished with 16 markers, converted a three-point play. PSHS continued to cut into the deficit and trailed just 40-36 with 2:07 to play in the third when Kerwyn Marshall drained a trey for part of his 11-point effort. A Plants turnaround jumper near the elbow from one of Seth Fallon’s game-high seven assists had the hosts down just 43-38 entering the fourth. Marshall opened the fourth with another bomb, but it appeared Logan had regained control after a Landis deuce and a deep 3 from Caleb Bell, who finished with 17 points and three steals, put the Chieftains ahead 49-43. Logan led 54-53 with 31.7 left in regulation, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to give South another chance. However, Bo Myers had a steal and was fouled. His two freebies with 9.4 to go gave Logan the three-point advantage, but Fallon’s step-back 3 from the left wing was money. Myers, who finished with a team-high 20 points as well as a game-high 12 boards, tied the game for the last time at 61-all thanks to an NBA trifecta with 2:26 left. After that, Seth Fallon’s two charity stripe tosses put the hosts ahead for good. Marshall had a key block on the defensive end which then led to two more freebies from Snider. Down 65-61, Logan forced a couple of 3s and never got any closer. Landis double-doubled with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Seth Fallon scored a baker’s dozen.
