PATRIOTS WINS OVER MEADOWBROOK

PARKERSBURG — Meadowbrook had 10 second-half turnovers, seven in the crucial fourth quarter, as well as two technical fouls and an intentional foul — all in the second half — here Tuesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center as the Colts nearly pulled off an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference upset of No. 1 Parkersburg South, but the Patriots rallied for a 56-52 victory. Gold was the the theme of the evening as Patriot junior Hailley Parsons — #Hailleystrong — gave a pregame speech at halfcourt thanking the community for their continued support. Once the game got started, it was a battle of contrasting styles as the Colts (11-4) of head man Lou Tolzda managed to keep the tempo in their favor until the fateful fourth quarter. That’s where the Patriots of head coach Mike Fallon, who improved to 12-1 with another home game set for Friday against Wheeling Park, used a 23-14 effort to secure the victory. Trey Singleton’s 3 with 4:56 remaining tied the game at 45-all, but Kerwyn Marshall’s free throw just six ticks later gave the Patriots the lead for good. An Easton Black lay-in with 60 seconds left closed the gap to 51-49, but Todd Burner found Cole Plants for a short kiss in the lane to push it back to a two-possession affair with 44 seconds to play. Singleton, who made four 3s and finished with a game-high 26 points to go along with five boards, five assists and two steals, canned a trifecta from the top of the key to make it 53-52. Two missed foul shots by the hosts gave the Colts a chance to take the lead, but Davis Black’s cross-court pass was intercepted by Plants, who led the Patriots with 19 points. Following an intentional foul, Plants made 1 of 2 for a 54-52 lead with 13.5 seconds to go and Burner, who had 10 points, was fouled on the ensuing inbounds and iced the game with two charity stripe makes. “I thought we played really flat. I didn’t think we executed offensively,” said Fallon, whose squad got 11 markers from Shane Snider. “We scored six points in the second quarter. We can’t do that. We’ve got to be able to put the ball in the hole more consistently. “They played physical and they beat on us and they banged on us. That was the style of game they wanted to play and everything. It was a little bit of two different tempos. I think once in the fourth quarter, once we kind of set our tempo back in, I think that helped us a bunch. We jumped in that press and I think it made a world of difference.” Meadowbrook, which went 2 of 6 from the foul line and 4 of 20 from long range, received 12 points and eight rebounds from David Black. PSHS attempted just five foul shots in the opening half, but finished 17 of 28. South led 24-18 with 5 minutes to play in the second quarter after Brayden Mooney had a tip-away steal and Seth Fallon fed Burner for a 3. However, the Colts ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a two-point advantage into intermission. Singleton had three buckets and Addy Black had a putback.
