IMPORTANT WEEK FOR SOUTH HOOPS

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South has a huge week of basketball ahead with Meadowbrook, Wheeling Park and Logan all coming to town. More importantly than the matchups, though, is that two of the Patriots’ three games will be dedicated to special causes — Tuesday against Meadowbrook will be the second annual “Hailley Strong” game while Friday against Park will be the sixth edition of “Anna’s Army.” South closes out the week with a triple-header against the Logan Chieftains on Saturday. “It’s really special week,” said South boys hoops coach Mike Fallon. “Those two gals (Hailley and Anna) have been a big part of what we do. Seeing how they fight every day, we’ve really been inspired by them.” At 11-1 overall this season and now ranked No. 1 in triple-A after knocking off previously top-ranked University last week, South hasn’t had any trouble getting good crowds this season. Still, expect an unmatched atmosphere at Rod Oldham Athletic Center this week. “It’s one of the coolest things. Our student section has been unreal,” Fallon said. “It’s really neat how much support they’ve given our program.” If you’ve followed South hoops in recent years, you’re probably familiar with the backstories of Hailley Parsons and Anna Gordon — Hailley developed cancer when she was in fourth grade, while Anna was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia at age 15. Proceeds from Tuesday’s and Friday’s games will benefit Hailley and Anna and their families. “There’s a lot of money involved in traveling and hospitals,” Fallon said. “Any type of help we can offer that offsets any costs for them is big.” On the court, South expects to be tested in these games. Meadowbrook, a regional qualifier in Ohio Division II last season, is coming off a 62-58 win over Warren last week. The Colts are led by point guard Trey Singleton, who had 18 points against the Warriors. “Meadowbrook is a very good, disciplined and well coached team,” Fallon said. “We went up there last year and they handed it to us. I’m glad we get to play them at home this year.” This will be the fifth straight year Wheeling Park is South’s opponent for “Anna’s Army.” “It just clicked for us,” Fallon said. “(Wheeling Park) coach (Michael) Jebbia started teaching about Friedreich’s Ataxia in his health class after learning about Anna. They’ve done such a great job in Wheeling and getting the word out. When we go up there, we see people in the crowd wearing purple. It’s really neat.” Wheeling Park is 8-2 this season and, like Ohio Division I program Logan, should present a tough challenge. South is expected to stick with the starting lineup of Cole Plants, Shane Snider, Todd Burner, Brayden Mooney and Seth Fallon. “The biggest thing we’ve told our kids is now is the time of year where we don’t worry about rankings or records,” coach Fallon explained. “That’s for March. Right now we’re just trying to get better and take each day as a new day.”
