WRESTLING South has three champs at Brooke WELLSBURG — Parkersburg South had six No. 1 seeds going into Saturday’s Frank Ferguson Brooke Classic, but in the end the Patriots finished with a trio of champions and garnered runner-up team honors behind Erie Cathedral Prep. Top-seeded Patriots Luke Martin at 138, Josh Humphreys at 152 and 220-pounder Braxton Amos each had top of the podium finishes for head man Shaun Smith. No. 2 seed Tucker Windland finished runner-up at 120 while third-seeded Zane Hinzman made the finals at 160, but also had to settle for second. Drew Dunbar had the top seed at 182, but also finished runner-up as too did Patriot top-seeded heavyweight Louden Haga. Devin Easton was seeded fifth at 106 and finished fourth. Patriot Zach Collins managed a fifth-place showing at 145 and Wyatt Linder took eighth at 170. Also placing for the Patriots were Brayden Johnson (113, 5th), Brayden Roberts (126, 3rd), Gavin Quiocho (132, 6th) and Dalton Fullerton (7th). Madonna wins ‘A’ Challenge ELLENBORO — Madonna 138-pounder Alec Cook was named the West Virginia ‘A’ Challenge Most Valuable Wrestler here Saturday night as the Blue Dons finished with 214.5 points to finish ahead of Greenbrier West (203.5), host Ritchie County (181.5), Wirt County (153.5) and St. Marys (113). Locally, St. Marys 106-pounder Wiley Houser pinned Wirt County’s Logan Powell in 2:28 to claim the 106-pound title. Ritchie County received championships from Brady Layman at 113 (beat Wirt’s Hunter Poole) and Connor Spaulding at 120, who beat Wahama’s Ethan Van Matre. Wirt County’s Wyatt Powell (132) and Tyler Consolidated heavyweight Cory Chipps were the only other victors from the LKC. Wahama’s Antonio Serevicz decision St. Marys’ Antone Herring to claim the 220-pound crown. Also earning runner-up honors from the area were Ritchie County’s Bret Primm at 126, Wirt County’s Hunter Moore at 170 and Rebel 182-pounder Josh Mason BOYS Ritchie County 78, Paden City 57 NEW MARTINSVILLE — Ethan Cross’ game-high 23 points weren’t enough for Paden City here Saturday night at Magnolia’s Rotary Challenge as the Wildcats were outscored in ever period during a 78-57 setback to Ritchie County. The 4-9 Rebels, who play Tuesday at Parkersburg Catholic, got double figures in scoring from Chase Sullivan (17), Ryan Morton (16), Clayton Bee (15) and Gabe Murphy (13). Tyler Consolidated 80, Monroe Central 54 NEW MARTINSVILLE — Griffin Phillips accumulated a game-high 28 points in Tyler Consolidated’s 80-54 victory over Monroe Central Saturday at the Magnolia Rotary Challenge. Mark Wilson added nine points, Mark Rucker tallied seven rebounds and five assists and Kyle Masson registered six assists. The Silver Knights (11-5) were a blistering 32 for 53 (60.4 percent) from the floor. Monroe Central was led by Logan Pletcher, who drained six 3-pointers and scored 20 points. Ryan LaFollette added 15 points for the Seminoles. Wheeling Central 79, Magnolia 43 NEW MARTINSVILLE — Top-ranked Class A Wheeling Central got 29 points from Owen Gainer and 25 more from Brett Price as the Maroon Knights beat Magnolia, 79-43, Saturday in the Rotary Challenge. The 4-8 Blue Eagles, who play host Tuesday to Paden City, were led by Leo Herrick’s 19 points and Jake Gamble’s 11. GIRLS St. Marys 55, South Harrison 43 ST. MARYS — St. Marys bested South Harrison, 55-43, in a second round WVHIT contest Saturday. The Blue Devils, now 6-8, got 13 points and eight rebounds from Kylie Wright, 12 points and six assists from Olivia DeWeese, eight points and nine boards from Lara Fetty and seven points apiece from Addie Furr and Destiny Scott. South Harrison’s (3-12) Kylie Saltis tallied a game-high 19 points while Jenna Montgomery and Abigail Hileman added 11 each. Beallsville 45, Paden City 23 PADEN CITY — Paden City couldn’t get the offense going. The Wildcats (4-10) fell to Beallsville 45-23 Saturday. They were tied at 4-all after a quarter but the Blue Devils outscored them 41-19 the rest of the way. Paden City was led by Hannah Loy’s seven points. Wayne 59, Ravenswood 35 RAVENSWOOD — Wayne showed quickly why it is 15-1 on the year Saturday, surging to a 38-9 halftime lead over Ravenswood Saturday en route to a59-35 victory. Aerial Adkins scored 15 points for the winners followed by 12 from Sara Hooks and 11 from Maddie Wilcox. The Red Devils (7-9) were paced by Ali Westenhaver’s 15 points and seven rebounds. Ravenswood, which plays host to Capital Monday, made just 9-of-45 shot attempts. Magnolia 61, Valley 52 (OT) NEW MARTINSVILLE — Kyndra Pilant posted her second triple-double of the season in a 61-52 overtime victory over Valley Saturday at the Rotary Challenge. Pilant finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks as the Blue Eagles improved to 8-7 on the year. She also dished out five assists. Maddie Winters added 18 points for Magnolia while Logan Riggs tallied 14 points and five assists. Sydney Palmer led Valley with 23 points.
