THIS WEEK IN MOV?ATHLETICS

Whoa! Did anyone else feel a quake in the area last week? If so, you felt the monumental shakeup taking place in the Class AAA boys basketball Top 10 after a great week for our two Parkersburg teams. Top 10 squads were falling all over the place. Jeff Mennillo’s Big Reds sent No. 6 South Charleston and No. 2 Woodrow Wilson home with losses, while Mike Fallon’s Patriots outlasted No. 1 and then-undefeated University, 67-63. Jobs well done to the coaches and players. Keep up the good work. I am certainly marking my calendar for the Class AAA, Region IV Section I final between these two squads. Both teams haven’t played their best basketball of the season yet, but are sure to be there come sectional time. Two shoutouts before we get started this week. Congratulations go out to Matt Littleton’s Big Red wrestling team on their Mountain State Athletic Conference team title won Saturday inside PHS Memorial Fieldhouse. Littleton’s squad, trailing by 21 points to Huntington entering the finals, received a spectacular effort in the closing matches. C.J. Wade put the cherry on top with a 4-3 decision in his consolation match to give the Big Reds a final three points and a one-point team win. Also a job well done to the Big Reds’ girls swimming team, who claimed their fourth straight MSAC title Saturday in Huntington. Now onto the action in the upcoming seven days … Mistakes were made when it came to highlighting the first big game of this week. In my excitement for another great PHS/South matchup, I jumped the gun on the next girls’ basketball matchup. While the game was originally scheduled for last Saturday, the WVU/Kentucky men’s basketball game last night caused a shift to 7:30 p.m. tonight. I am not going into a whole lot of detail on the game here because I will spoil my preview. Make sure to check Tuesday’s paper for the my review of the aftermath. Speaking of Tuesday, Williamstown and Ravenswood boys basketball teams get together for their second matchup of the year at 7:30 p.m. Fans in attendance couldn’t have asked for a more competitive contest the first time arond. Mick Price’s undefeated and second-ranked Red Devils picked up a 62-61 win on the Yellowjackets home floor back on Dec. 10. Stephen Dawson’s duece with 12.5 seconds left proved the winnng bucket. Another big girls’ hoops matchup takes place across the Ohio River on Wednesday. Two teams eyeing deep postseason runs get together when Waterford makes the trip to Warren for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Both the Warriors and Wildcats are veteran-led, well-coached squads and this should make for a good contest. A bit further South, Parkersburg High’s basketball teams defend their Big Atlantic Classic titles Thursday and Friday in Beckley. Getting the actual schedule has proved harder than getting Ravenswood’s Isaiah Morgan to miss a foul shot (he connects on 93 percent of his freebies, but I have been able to confirm one game. The Big Red girls play Wyoming East for the second time this season in one of the contests. Back home, possibly-top-ranked Parkesburg South boys host Wheeling Park in the rescheduled Anna’s Army game at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. Closing out the week’s hardwood action is a rescheduled game from the snow week. Parkersburg Catholic boys travel to Wheeling Central for a game that features two of the most dynamic scorers in the state. Central’s Brent Price and the Crusaders’ Cade Ullman have a talent for putting the rock in the cylinder at a high volume. Ullman leads the MOV in scoring at 28.7 points per game. On the mat, the Little Kanawha Conference wrestling championships get underway at 9 a.m. inside Calhoun County High School. Braxton County, who won the Bob Zide Rumble Saturday in Williamstown, stands as the team to beat for the overall title. Finally, PHS and South swimmers hop in the water at the Class AAA, Region I championships on the same day. Contact Joe Albright at jalbright@newsandsentinel.com.
