SOUTH DOWNS NO. 4 MOHIGANS

PARKERSBURG — It wasn’t pretty at times, but still a 54-42 girls basketball win for Parkersburg South over visiting Morgantown Thursday night in a battle of Class AAA top-5 teams. The fifth-ranked host Patriots improved to 11-3 with the victory, while the No. 4 Mohigans slipped to 10-4. South though did start strong Thursday. From an early 3-2 deficit, a 9-0 Patriot spurt with Devin Hefner registering five points, including a trey, propelled South ahead 11-3 midway through the first quarter. Then after a Makenna Winans’ 3-ball made it 14-5, frustrated Mohigan head coach Jason White took his second timeout already at the 2:22 mark before the period ended 17-7 on a trey from the corner by Allie Taylor. The second stanza proved to be pretty much a standoff, but still in South’s favor by a 17-13 margin to lead 30-17 at halftime. But at one point, Morgantown, sparked by an 8-2 run, narrowed its gap to just 21-17 at 3:47 of the second before another run, this time of 9-0 by South to end the quarter, led by Winans, Allyssa Wilson and finally a Hefner trey at 1.3 seconds. The third quarter never saw South get further ahead than 15 early, but the Mohigans closed in on the Partiots late at 40-33 prior to a Taylor basket followed by a Winans free throw with 6.7 seconds left to salvage a 10-point lead, 43-33, with a quarter to play yet. In the fourth, Morgantown attempted a comeback and did slice the gap down to eight, 48-40, with 3:42 remaining. But Taylor sank 4-of-6 good South foul shots in the final 1:24 to quell any more of the Mohigans’ late uprising. For South, Hefner led with 16 points, while Winans and Taylor each netted 13, with Aleena Daniels tossing in 11 points for Morgantown and Aliyssa Neal tallying eight. “You don’t want to get behind them (Morgantown) because they’re so disciplined then in running their offense and getting their shots,” said South head coach Ed Davis. “So any win over them is a nice win.” He particularly pointed out that “in the last three or four minutes of the game, we did a good job contesting their shots and that was pretty good, especially when we were kind of struggling a little bit offensively there.”
