MAKENNA WINANS’ 25 POINTS PACES PARKERSBURG SOUTH IN VICTORY

PARKERSBURG — Allie Taylor got Parkersburg South off to a good start in the first two minutes with three treys, but the host Patriots had to fight off rallying Teays Valley Christian in the fourth quarter to register a 72-59 girls basketball win Tuesday night. The victory increased South’s record to 10-3, while the Lions are now 11-7. The No. 9 Class AAA-ranked Patriots next host Morgantown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. South, playing its first home game in 43 days, got catapulted into a quick early lead by Taylor with her trio of 3-point hoops and a basket to tally all of the Patriots’ initial 11 points to boost them out to a 11-3 lead. The South point advantage continued throughout the first quarter, several times by 10, and was upped to as much as 17 in the second stanza at 39-22 with 1:48 to go and at halftime with the Patriots ahead 43-26. In the third quarter though, South early on saw its margin reduced to 12, only to have Alyssa Wilson snd Makenna Winans combine for a 5-0 run to push the gap back to 17 at 48-31, although Teays Valley’s Myra Cuffee tallied the Lions’ last eight points of the period to make it a 14-point game, 57-43, going to the fourth. And the visitors kept chipping away at their deficit in fourth quarter, slicing it down to nine twice and to eight at 62-54 on a 3-ball from Arina Kholpkova. It was still only an eight-point spread once more at 64-56 before Winans notched all eight of South’s points down the stretch in a personal 8-3 run to turn the final score into a 13-point win. For South, Winans paced the Patriots with 25 points, followed by Taylor with 19 along with five treys and Devin Hefner with 14. Teays Valley was led in scoring by Cuffee with 21 points, also with five 3-balls, and 14 each from Sasha Antonova and Kholpkova. “Allie found her shot a little bit more tonight,” said South head coach Ed Davis. “That’s the kind of offensive player that she can be for us — and has been, so I was happy for her.” On Teays Valley, “they present a lot of problems,” said Davis. “They’re a little bit taller, and can step out and have unlimited range. But it’s good experience to play someone like that. “Mostly though, I thought we were just happy to finally get to play a game at home.”
