PARKERSBURG SOUTH DEFEATS WARREN

VINCENT — Cole Plants was clutch at crunchtime. The 6-foot-2 senior scored a game-high 19 points, including six freebies in the fourth quarter, to lead Parkersburg South to a 57-50 triumph over Warren in boys’ basketball action at Warrior Coliseum Friday night. “We made our free-throws, and that’s one things we’ve done well this season,” said South head coach Mike Fallon, whose Patriots were nine-of-11 from the foul line in the final period. “Once again, we’re still not playing well, but we’ll find ways.” Shane Snider added 17 points, while Seth Fallon netted eight for the winners. South, fifth-ranked in W.Va. Class AAA with a 9-1 overall record, extended its winning streak to seven. “If we could’ve snuck out of here with a one-point win, we would’ve taken it,” Mike Fallon said. “This is a tough place to play, and I think other than Parkersburg South, it’s probably the best basketball environment around. I’m kind of biased. The place was packed and there was good sportsmanship between both teams. This is one of those games that’ll pay dividends down the road.” Warren (8-4) had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Warriors were paced by Josh Huffman’s 16 points. Noah Nichols chipped in with 13, and Jared Hall had nine. “We’re playing some really good teams, like Parkersburg South” said WHS boss Blane Maddox. “I could go right down the list. And, we’re in there until the last four minutes. We wanted to keep the game in the 50s, and we did that. It was a good ballgame. We’d just like to get one these close ones.” Warren had a three-point advantage late in the opening period until Snider drained a buzzer-beating three to knot the score at 11-all. In the opening eight minutes, Snider had seven of the Patriots points. The Warriors got a spark off the bench from Clay Miller, who tallied five first-quarter points. In the second quarter, Plants knocked down a three to put the Patriots ahead. But Warren came right back on buckets by Nichols and Huffman to take a 15-14 lead. Early in the stanze, there were five lead changes. South eventually got the upper hand, though, and closed out the period with a 9-2 run for a 27-21 halftime lead. During second-quarter action, Snider and Plants had six and five points, respectively. Sparked by Nichols’ seven points and Huffman’s six, the Warriors came back and outpointed the Patriots, 16-10, in the third quarter. Nichols’ buzzer-beating deuce tied it at 37-37. At the outset of the fourth quarter, Plants hit a jumper and Snider scored on a drive to give South a four-point cushion. After Hall converted two freebies to cut it to 41-39, South took a timeout at the 3:34 mark. When play was resumed, Todd Burner made a trey from the corner to give the Patriorts a five-point lead. “The fourth quarter for them, they (Patriots) executed,” Maddox said. “(Todd) Burner hit that big shot in the corner there, and they finished the foul shots off really well. “They’re a high-scoring team when they needed it. I think they got five points in a row on us, and we came down empty on two possessions. It looked like we were three-for-a-lot in the fourth quarter. Then, we got into a situation where we had to to foul.” Before that, though, South stretched its lead to 46-39 on a Plants’ bucket. Then, with 2:47 left in the contest, Seth Fallon took the ball out-of-bounds underneath the basket and bounced the ball off the Warren defender’s back right to himself for an easy layup, giving the Patriots a nine-point cushion. “I had no clue that was coming,” said Mike Fallon, smiling. “I told him that it had better work.” Down the stretch, Warren had to resort to fouling the Patriots, and Plants was pretty much a deadeye at the line, keeping the Warriors at bay.
