SOUTH MATMEN SET NEW OVAC POINTS RECORD

WHEELING — It was just more of the same here at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference wrestling championships here late Saturday night inside Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena — Parkersburg South domination. Head coach Shaun Smith’s Patriots broke their own OVAC record for most points ever scored in the tournament, which was previously at 315 back in 2015. Parkersburg South had seven finalists and came away with five OVAC individual championships en route to winning the Class 5A title for a fifth straight season. South finished with 324.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Beaver Local’s 240. Moved to the last match of the night, three-time OVAC champion Jashon Hubbard of Steubenville was denied his fourth title as Parkersburg South senior Josh Humphreys won the 152-pound finale via a 3-0 decision. Humphreys was honored with the Bierkortte Award, which is given to the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. Patriot 138-pounder Luke Martin was vying for his third career conference crown, but was doubled up by Big Red Anthony Rice, 6-3. Martin is a four-time OVAC finalist, having won titles in 2016 and 2017 and also going runner-up as a freshman at 106. PSHS got its first title when 120-pounder Tucker Windland, the No. 2 seed, handed University No. 1 seed Jake Staud his second setback of the campaign. Windland grabbed his OVAC title thanks to a 3-2 decision. Brayden Roberts gave the Patriots their second championship when the top seed at 126 nipped No. 2 seed Jacob Simpson of University, 1-0. Drew Dunbar used a 3-1 decision as the No. 1 seed to win the 182-pound crown against third-seeded Garret Cook of Madonna. Ironman champ Braxton Amos, who was the OVAC Hercules Award winner for having the most pins in the shortest amount of time, finally got a shot at his first conference title and the sophomore didn’t disappoint following an 11-1 major decision at 220 against No. 2 seed Dylan Wood of Wheeling Park. South’s Zane Hinzman, last year’s 152-pound OVAC champ, lost a tough 2-1 battle in overtime in the 160 finals as the top seed versus John Marshall’s Anthony Carman, who was the No. 2 seed. Also placing for the Patriots and helping toward the record-breaking team effort were heavyweight Louden Haga (third), 145-pounder Zach Collins (third), 106-pounder Devin Easton (fourth), 132-pounder Gavin Quiocho (fifth), 113-pounder Brayden Johnson (sixth) and 195-pounder Dalton Fullerton, who took seventh. 65th Annual OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament (at WesBanco Arena, Wheeling) TEAM SCORING: 1.
