SOUTH LOOKS TO FOLLOW VICTORY AT UNIVERSITY WITH STRONG BOYD CO. KY TEAM

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South head coach Ed Davis is just glad to be back playing some basketball. The 7-3 Patriots, who are coming off a road win Thursday at University and entered the week ranked seventh in Class AAA, just played their first game since a three point setback on Dec. 30 to rival Parkersburg. Now, PSHS is set to play host at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center to Kentucky power Boyd County, which enters with a 12-2 record for head coach Pete Fraley. A year ago, the Lions made the “Sweet 16” and the state tournament. “It was just a weird place in the schedule and we had the cancellation Monday,” Davis said of having such a long layoff and missing the game against Huntington, which will be played on Valentine’s Day. Boyd County is coming off a 68-59 win against Ashland on Thursday and junior guard Savannah Wheeler poured in 28 points, which was right at her season average. Wheeler is already set to play at Marshall University. The Lions also have a pair of players with some local ties as twin sisters Payton and Charity Shears grew up in Wirt County and played middle school basketball in Elizabeth. “Some of our seniors are still friends with the Shears twins and they mentioned it when we were just casually talking this summer that we needed a game or two,” Davis said of how Boyd County got on the schedule. “I talked to Bill Camp and he got a message to them and agreed to get them up here. It was actually the kids’ idea based on their friendships. That’s kind of how it came about. I guess we are supposed to go down there this year.” Devin Hefner (16.7 ppg) and Makenna Winans (1 5 ppg) continue to lead the Patriots in scoring. Allie Taylor is averaging almost 10 points an outing while teammate Sierra Hays is coming off an 11-point effort against University. Boyd County also features Harley Paynter, the Lions’ second leading scorer. “Hopefully, we’ll get to play,” said Davis, noting the potential for some havoc from Mother Nature. “It will be an exciting game.” The varsity game will tip following the noon junior varsity affair.
