PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South High has 16 players on its varsity boys’ basketball roster, and everyone of them saw playing time. Even more impressive, 15 of them scored. The Patriots had little trouble against visiting Brooke High en route to a 79-53 triumph at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center Thursday night. “We played a bunch of kids tonight, and that was a great thing, because when they came in, we didn’t miss a beat,” said South head coach Mike Fallon, whose team extended its winning streak to six. “We’ve got some size, and some kids with skill who can shoot the basketball.” Shane Snider scored a game-high 18 points to lead the PSHS, which is ranked No. 5 in W.Va. Class AAA with an 8-1 overall record. Seth Fallon added 13 markers, while the non-starters contribued 35 points. “Those guys (non-starters) work hard every day in practice, too,” Mike Fallon said. “It’s nice to see them get in tonight and get some minutes.” Brooke fell to 4-6 overall. The Bruins were paced by Evan Cuomo and Joey Georgy, who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Sparked by Snider’s six first-quarter points, South staked itself to a 19-14 advantage. Cuomo and Georgy each had four points to keep the Bruins relatively close. Early in the second period, Brooke cut it to four, 24-20, on Cuomo’s jumper. But after that, South scored 10 unanswered points to stretch its lead to 14, 34-20. Burner’s three helped trigger the run, and that was followed by a Seth Fallon putback. Malaki Sylvia then stole the ball and scored to make it 31-20. Capping the run, Colton Luther made a bucket and converted one-of-two from the charity stripe. At halftime, South led 38-29. “I think at the beginning of the game we came out and tried to do a knockout blow,” Mike Fallon said. “It was one of those things where we were pressing too hard to try to make things happen. And, that was one of the things we talked to them at halftime, to just let the flow of the game take care of that.” The third quarter proved to be pivotal as South outpointed Brooke, 27-1, good for a 65-30 lead going into the fourth quarter. During the surge, Issac Smith — who finished with eight points in the game — and Fallon each scored six markers. Brooke’s lone point in the period was a Justin Pennybacker freebie at the 2:36 mark. The Bruins were 0-for-4 from the field and turned the ball over 13 times in the third stanza. “That was big,” said Mike Fallon of South’s dominance in the third quarter. “We came out in the third quarter and played good, solid defense. And it just started snowballing. Hopefully, that was a learning point for our team. To win a state championship, we’ve got to get better every day.” Brooke never recovered from the third quarter, although it did outpoint South, 23-14, too little, too late in the final period. Parkersburg South is scheduled to host Wheeling Park Saturday at 7:15 p.m. “The kids are playing well,” Fallon said. “But there’s no easy games coming up. “We’ve not played great yet this year. But we’ve played well.”
