PARKERSBURG SOUTH TOPS BEST OF CLASS AA/A COMPETITION

PARKERSBURG — Although it took nearly five hours to complete, wrestling fans definitely got what they paid for here Thursday night inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center as Class AAA defending state champion Parkersburg South and the top two programs in Class AA/A varsity wrestling squared off in a triangular. Reigning Class AA state champ Independence knocked off East Fairmont in what was a near two hour opener, 33-26, as Patriot 220-pounder Trey Gunnoe’s pin of Nate Gerau in 1:25 sealed the victory. The host Patriots of head coach Shaun Smith suffered five losses to IHS, but had more than enough to roll to a 47-15 victory. In the late finale, which finished past 11 o’clock, East Fairmont also had five triumphs, but were deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct en route to a 43-17 setback. During one of the marquee matches, Parkersburg South state runner-up Brayden Roberts more than held his own against Bee 126-pounder Brock Whorton, who has a pair of state crowns to his credit. However, Whorton used a takedown with six seconds to go to score a 4-2 decision. PSHS received victories versus EFHS via decisions in the early going by Gavin Quiocho (132) and Luke Martin. The 138-pound Martin, a two-time state champ, battled through a leg injury to hold off Kaleb Fazenbacker, 11-9. Patriot Zach Collins followed with a pin at 145 and the hosts also got mat slappers from three-time state champ Josh Humphreys (152), Dalton Fullerton (195), Ironman champion Braxton Amos (220) and heavyweight Louden Haga, who finished off both of his opponents in 15 seconds. Parkersburg South had a 3-1 win by Zane Hinzman at 170 versus Nathan Kotsko and at 182 where Drew Dunbar picked up a 15-6 major decision against Grant Postlethwait. During Independence’s match, Patriot Tucker Windland fell 3-2 at 120 to Sean Dawson, but Roberts’ 27-second pin of Liam Lusher tied the match at six-all and the hosts went ahead for good when Quiocho won by forfeit. Hinzman also had a solid 4-2 victory at 160 against IHS’ Connor Gibson, using a takedown just 20 ticks into overtime for a 4-2 win. After waiting nearly three-and-a-half hours, Amos finally came out for his first match as the large crowd was ready to see him go. However, IHS opted not to send out Trey Gunnoe and the crowd responded with a chorus of boos and the sophomore just smiled and clapped his hands after getting his arm raised into the air. South 106-pounder Devin Easton, who lost 10-4 to East Fairmont’s Geno Casuccio, received a win by forfeit against Independence.
