SOUTH DROPS 1ST DECISION OF SEASON IN TOURNEY FINALE

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South is “probably not going to play another team with two 6-10 guys” again this season, stated Patriot boys head basketball coach Mike Fallon after his team’s first loss of the season Wednesday night. But the Patriots did have to Wednesday in the championship game of the South Holiday Tournament and the duo combined for 54 points as Teays Valley Christian downed PSHS 76-65 at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. The setback gave South a 2-1 record going into its next game Friday versus PHS at 7:30 p.m. at Oldham, while Teays Valley evened its mark at 6-6. Those 6-10 cagers, Sasha Sukhanov with 36 points and Anderson Mirambeaux with 18, were Teays Valley players to be reckoned with, both inside and outside as well with three treys each, while for South, Shane Snider netted 19 points, Seth Fallon had 15 on five treys, Cole Plants tallied 12 and Todd Burner added nine on three treys. The initial period Wednesday ended with TV up 11-10 and the second stanza saw South grab its first lead at 13-11 on a Burner 3-ball. But then the 6-10ers scored the next 10 points for Teays Valley to run out to a 21-14 lead at the 4:46 mark. A Brayden Mooney trey and two from Seth Fallon closed the gap to 24-23. Still though, TV went back up by seven at 32-25 before a Plants trey made it a four-point game, 32-28, at the half. In the third quarter, the Patriots were behind until Snider scored inside at 5:07 for a 35-34 lead. From there, TV eventually forged a 44-39 lead, followed by two more treys to go ahead by double-digits at 50-39 that was narrowed to 50-42 at the quarter break on a Seth Fallon trey with 1.2 seconds left. South in the fourth quarter reduced the margin to six and five, but TV kept going right back to nine, 10, 11 or then 13 up halfway through, although back to eight once. However after that, the Partriots pulled no closer than nine the rest of the way as Teays Valley hiked the spread to as much as 14 late. Despite the loss, coach Fallon thought “we held our own with them (Teays Valley). I think there’s no team in West Virginia like them. So I hope that what we got from the whole tournament from playing Capital last night and Teays Valley tonight will pay dividends down the road for us.” For Fallon, he thought “we kind of lost some momentum in the third quarter, but still in the fourth (quarter) had a run to get it (the Teays Valley lead) down to six (56-50) before they made a couple plays. But give them credit; they’re very good.”
