SOUTH SURVIVES SCARE FROM RIVER

PARKERSBURG — Ed Davis and his Parkersburg South girls’ hoops squad bounced back from their first loss of the season Saturday against Wheeling Park, with a 57-41 win over River (Ohio) Monday night inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. It was a steady climb to the Patriots’ third win of the season as their point totals increased each period. They tallied 12, 13, 14, and then 18 points in successive quarters. Three South cagers chipped in double-digits for Davis in the victory. Devin Hefner led all scorers with 23 points. Allie Taylor connected for 15 markers, while Makenna Winans tallied 11 points. This was the second straight high-scoring game for Hefner after a 25-point effort against Park two days ago. Winans also recorded a double-double with 12 collected boards. The first half certainly didn’t make it likely the blue and white with a touch of red would have three scorers with 10 or more points. In a low scoring opening 16 minutes, the home team went to the locker room with a 25-20 lead. Yet, it was River who had the early advantage … If very briefly. Lauren Flannery connected on a drive to the basket, but missed the and-one for a 2-0 River lead 25 seconds into the game. Her score set off a chain of three lead changes and ties before the first quarter came to an end knotted at 12. South had to work hard to get its points late though. Misfires on their first six shots led the Patriots to a 1 of 7 stretch on their first eight attempts. However, Winans and Taylor scored four of their points late in the period. Solid post play led to a few easy buckets for the duo. “We thought we had a little bit of an advantage in there to start the game,” said Davis, when quizzed on his desire to get the ball in the post tonight. “But I think we were thinking about it too much at times and tried to force it. But they did a good job of harrassing us when we did get it in there. But a win is a win is a win.” Taylor’s trey with 5:08 left in the second quarter then gave her team the lead for the rest of the evening. The basket was only partly the reason. South’s defense clamped down on the Pilots’ offense, not allowing a bucket for a six-minute stretch of time. South also started pushing the issue in the transition game with Hefner recording eight of her points in the closing 3:39, mostly with open layups. River never got any closer than their halftime deficit after the break. Flannery did score 13 of her team-high 20 points in the final two quarters, but the rest of the Pilots couldn’t muster any offense. Other River players scored just eight points in the second half. Their opponent switched to a zone, which really threw the visitors off their game plan. “I thought the kids played the zone prettty good at the end of the game,” said Davis. “When we switched it midway through the fourth quarter and they did a pretty good job of recognizing were the shooters were on the floor.”
