South Swimmers perform well at the Mohawk Invite

SOUTH SWIMMERS PERFORM WELL AT THE MOHAWK INVITE

Mohawk Invite MORGANTOWN — Freshman Jaden Welsh of Parkersburg tied a school record in the 50 freestyle, Big Red David Snider won two golds and Parkersburg South’s Dominic Collins was a double-winner here Saturday in the Mohawk Invitational at Morgantown High School. The PHS girls defeated Wheeling Park, 447-352, as Welsh finished runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 25.76. Parkersburg South’s boys, who topped the red and white for third (263-190), watched Collins win the 50 freestyle (22.22) and the 100 freestyle (51.00). Snider’s victories came in the 100 fly (54.29) and the 100 backstroke, where he beat South runner-up Macquire McDuff, 54.63 to 1:03.41. Collins anchored South’s victorious 200 free relay team, which finished in 1:38.55 with the help of Reece Fletcher, McDuff (third in the 200 IM) and Oliver Fletcher. Collins swam the lead leg on the 400 free relay first-place squad, once again with the aid of McDuff, Fletcher and Fletcher. Reece Fletcher also grabbed a pair of fifth-place finishes in the50 free and 100 backstroke. Big Red Isaac Bond took fifth in the 500 freestyle. Parkersburg’s girls didn’t have an individual champion, but the Big Reds captured the 200 medley relay title with a time of 1:59.39 thanks to Mary Strobl, Welsh, Olivia Collett and Emma Padden as well as the 200 freestyle relay, which featured Kate Snider, Collett, Grace Cox and Welsh (1:44.54). Collett was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.37) and took fourth in the 100 fly. Cox (runner-up in 200 IM, 2:20.41; third in 100 free), Snider (third in 200 free, 4th in 100 free), Strobl (fourth in 500 free), Welsh (fourth in 100 backstroke) and Padden (fifth in 50 free) also helped boost the team scoring. The Patriot girls finished in eighth place and their top individual efforts came from Sophie Miller (sixth in 500 free) and Makayla Smith (sixth in 200 free).
