DEVIN HEFNER DRIVES IN SATURDAY'S GAME WITH WHEELING PARK

PARKERSBURG — A 12-3 run early in the third quarter by visiting Wheeling Park here Saturday afternoon inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center keyed the Patriots’ 75-67 victory against Parkersburg South. South point guard Kenzie Johnson didn’t play in the second half and the Park backcourt of head coach Ryan Young controlled the game en route to improving to 3-0. “She’s in concussion protocol. She said her head was hurting her at halftime,” said PSHS head coach Ed Davis, who received a game-high 25 points from Devin Hefner. “We had some run-outs early in the game that we didn’t execute very well and we normally do. “It was just one of those things. I am really proud of their effort in the second half and we battled. It’s a long season and we got a long way to go. We got some kids on the bench some valuable playing time that hadn’t had varsity experience so that was good.” Trailing 32-29 at the break, the hosts got a Makenna Winans (13 points) putback and a Hefner deuce to regain the lead for the final time. However, Bella Abernathy started the key spurt with a hoop. That was followed by deuces from Morgan Glass, who had 13 points, and a 3-ball from Brionna Gray. Although Allyssa Wilson tallied two of her nine counters to make it 39-35, WPHS got a triple from Emily Pavlic along with a Glass putback to take control. Reserve Shanley Woods, who finished with 14 points while Pavlic had a team-high 17 which included hitting 9 of 10 at the line, drained one from downtown and then scored off a Kylie McKennen assist for a 51-39 lead. The host Patriots, who made their first 17 foul shots and finished 21 of 23 from the charity stripe, trailed 53-41 entering the fourth and never was able to make it a one possession affair again. Sierra Hays came off the South bench and finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. Hefner, who joined Wilson in grabbing seven caroms, made all 11 of her charity stripe tosses while also collecting four steals.
