SOPHOMORE BRAXTON AMOS WINS IRON MAN TOURNAMENT

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Parkersburg South’s Braxton Amos joined some elite company here late Saturday night at Walsh Jesuit High School as the sophomore became just the third Patriot to ever win an individual Ironman championship. Amos, ranked second in the country by FloWrestling, squared off against No. 12 Ben Goldin of Lake Highland Prep School in Florida and used a reversal in the third period to score a 2-1 triumph in the 220-pound finals. “He was bigger than me. Everything was bigger. I don’t know how he made 220,” said Amos, who missed his freshman campaign for head coach Shaun Smith due to knee surgery. “His hands were like twice as big as mine. His legs were bigger than mine and he was like 6-4. It was crazy.” Overall, Amos went 4-0, wrestling once on Friday and thrice on Saturday. “Four matches might as well been 100 miles. Tomorrow morning I’m probably not going to be able to walk or something crazy,” Amos quipped not long after he had his hand raised. “Last year I was here sitting in the stands, up here thinking what if this could be me? “What would it be if I was here? It didn’t answer my questions, but God it feels good. I want to thank my coaches and parents. They’ve done so much for me.” All of the scoring in the match came in the third period. “I rode him out in the second period and got a stall call with one or two seconds left. I took down in the third. Him and I scrambled for about 30 seconds or so and I ended up on top,” Amos said of his winning reversal. “I was sitting about 1:30 or 1:20 and I was riding. At least trying to make myself look busy so I wouldn’t draw the second stall. “With about 30 seconds left he got up to his feet and for some reason I couldn’t mat return him and instead of taking the stall and then him getting out I let him get out (for an escape). I kept pushing the pace from my feet. I didn’t give him any time setting up so I wouldn’t get hit with stalling (for a point) and he couldn’t get a shot off.” Amos now joins ex-Patriots Casey Daggett (160 in 2000) and Ryan Metz (125 in 2001) as Ironman champs from PSHS. The Patriot also was more than pleased to have some crowd support. “There was a ton of South people up here,” he said. “Young guys, guys who didn’t even have kids in it or kids at South. It was amazing. “We had 20 to 30 people up here from Parkersburg South. I don’t know how to put it into words. I loved it. They were going crazy the entire time. It was awesome.” Patriot 152-pound teammate Josh Humphreys finished 4-2 during the two-day event. His final victory was a 3-0 decision against Joshua Kim from Santiago, California, which earned him a fifth-place finish. Kim entered the tournament ranked No. 11 nationally while Humphreys was 14th. “He dominated the entire match,” Amos said of Humphreys’ victory. “I’m happy that he is on my team and not anywhere else.” Five other Patriots also competed for coach Smith, but PSHS had no other placers in the top eight. South’s Luke Martin finished 3-2 at 132. Heavyweight Louden Haga and 126-pounder Brayden Roberts each went 2-2. Zane Hinzman finished 1-2 in the 160-pound class while 138-pounder Gavin Quiocho suffered a pair of setbacks on Friday to finish 0-2, which was the same fate for Warren High School 106-pounder Peyten Kellar. Considered the toughest prep tournament in the country, the seven-man Parkersburg South roster finished in a tie for 11th overall.
